Exploring the digital turn of the humanities

ArchEthno is a set of digital tools still in progress, which allows the ethnographer to structure her raw materials, transform them into data answering a scientific question, and provide each data and metadata with a level of confidentiality.

Oupoco is a project aiming to generate an infinite number of sonnets from a database of 19th century poetry. The project is inspired by Queneau’s book One hundred thousand billion poems.

The DatArt project brings together initiatives whose aim is to decentralize the study of the art world from Paris to the regions. Even if the capital was a major artistic center at the national and international level, other cities constituted a cultural breeding ground, both in the market structures and in the actions set up by local artists. 

The Principles of the Washington Conference in 1998, the discovery of the "Gurlitt treasure" and Emmanuel Macron's speech at the University of Ouagadougou in 2017 have rekindled debates on the restitution of cultural property and brought to light complex histories of heritage (de)possession. In these different forms of translocations of cultural property, one notion remains in the shadows: that of sequestration. 

For many years, digital approaches to literature have mainly followed two threads: the linguistic one, of the statistical study of words and forms, and the ecdotal one, of the establishment of the text. MSS (Manuscripts Sales catalogueS) proposes to work on the opening of a third path: that of a computational approach of the reception, at the crossroads of philology and economy.

Led by Quentin Bernet, the DataVirgo project analyzes the diffusion of an iconographic motif between the 14th and 16th centuries: the Virgin of Humility. It mobilizes digital cartography to serve the formal analysis of works in art history.

The BHF is an essential tool for the historical community as well as a true heritage project.

This website gives access to the archives linked to the Villa of Diomedes in Pompeii, from the documentation of the initial excavation in the 18th century (1771-1775), to the field data produced by the archaeological mission of the Villa Diomedes Project program, under the direction of Hélène Dessales (2012-2019). 

The early 19^th century, witnessed the development of the art market in Paris, with an increase in the number of dealers and the specialization of certain districts into "rue des tableaux".

Multilingual BookNLP is a UC Berkeley project aiming at producing NLP pipelines adapted to literary texts (in particular novels: analysis of characters, places, etc.). LATTICE will produce the NLP pipeline  for French.

Cinex is an international database of cinema exhibitions, this collaborative project aims to share identification data and analysis of film collection displays around the world in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Idiolecte project aims at modelling the evolution of a personal writing style.

Cyclades is an international collaborative project aiming at developing annotation tools for Digital humanities, especially for literary corpora (Cyclades means ‘’Corpora and Computational Linguistics for Digital Humanities’’)

EMAN is a digital publishing tool for the dissemination and exploitation of modern manuscripts and archives.

The team "Nietzsche and his time" is dedicated to the editing and interpretation of Nietzsche's work with genetic methods.

Between the beginning of the 20^th century and his death, the dental surgeon George Viau (1855-1939) built up an exceptional collection, both in terms of size - approximately 1,200 works of art - and quality, bringing together the greatest impressionist and post-impressionist names such as Monet, Renoir, Sisley, Pissarro, Degas, Morisot, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Denis, Vuillard, and many others.

Gallicagram is a web app developed by Benjamin Azoulay and Benoît de Courson. It plots the evolution of a syntagm utilisation throughout time, exploiting the the numerized books of the National French Library (BNF), a website called Gallica.

IMAGO is a Jean Monnet Excellence Center, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union and the ENS-PSL during three years, from 2019 to 2022. It aims at better understanding images’ circulation with the help of new digital methodologies and cartographies, in order to write a new kind of visual history of globalization within and out of Europe.

Founded at ENS-PSL in 2009, Artl@s is structured around a digital database of exhibition catalogs, intended to contain all types of exhibition catalogs, from the invention of the catalog (Salon de Paris, 1673) to the present day.

At the intersection between data science and English literature, this projects seeks to examine ten years of the Londonian contemporary theatre (2010 – 2020) through the eyes of two communities: the journalistic one on the one hand, and the digital one on the other hand.

At the same time catalogue, library, browser and search engine, iSimon aims to gather all the published resources useful to Simonian studies: bibliographical references, texts of books and related articles, audio and audiovisual documents. 

Under construction since 2018 on the e-Man platform, this edition will give the text and facsimile of the manuscripts of about 1,550 letters that Baudelaire sent to various recipients, between January 1832 and March 1866, and of the 211 letters addressed to Baudelaire that are known today. In June 2021, we put online a sample of letters covering the period 1848-1852.
