I am a PhD student in Art History at the University of Campinas (Unicamp, Brazil) and a visiting researcher at the National Institute of Art History (INHA, France), in collaboration with the ENS-PSL Observatoire des humanités numériques.

Field of research

My thesis focuses on the general exhibitions - "exposições gerais" in Portuguese - held by the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between 1840 and 1884. This research is based on the social history of art to highlight the articulatory role of general exhibitions in the emerging Brazilian art system in the 19th century. Quantitative methods and digital tools are used to explore a database built by transcribing exhibition catalogs. Approximately 3,400 artworks were shown to the public.

This research framework allows us to analyze the exhibitions through new questions in art history, which go beyond national borders and identities, considering the mechanisms and agents responsible for the circulation of artists, objects and artistic models on a global and local scale.
