Céline Labrune-Badiane holds a doctorate in contemporary history from the University of Paris VII and is a researcher associated at ITEM (CNRS/ENS) and at the AIHP laboratory (University of the Antilles). Member of the editorial board of the online journal of contemporary African history.

Field of research

My research aims to contribute to the social history of West Africa in the colonial and post-colonial periods. It is structured around two axes: the history of education and the history of contemporary Atlantic Africa based on the study of West Indian and Guyanese presence in Africa.

In order to make the data, archives and texts used in my research accessible to researchers and a wider public, I began to use digital tools. First, in parallel with our book on the role of African teachers in the production of knowledge in French West Africa, we have created, with Etienne Smith (MCF at the University of Bordeaux Montaigne), an online research notebook, envisaged as collaborative and evolving, composed of bio-bibliographic records of African teachers who participated in the production of knowledge. Our objective is also to create a digital library, gathering all the texts written or co-written by African schoolteachers in French West Africa. The URL is: https://bibcolaf.hypotheses.org

As a researcher associated at ITEM, I have coordinated the project of digitization and valorization of the archives of the Guinean historian Djibril Tamsir Niane and contributed to the publication of the manuscripts of the West Indian writer Victor Jean Louis Bagio'o (https://eman-archives.org/francophone/collections/show/334). Currently, I coordinate the archival part of the Senghor International Research Program (ITEM and the Department of Modern Literature of the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar (Senegal)) with my colleague Mouhamadou Moustapha Sow (Department of History of UCAD). The project involves mapping and inventorying the archives of/about the first president of the Republic of Senegal and poet Léopold Sédar Senghor.
